INTO THE HEART OF GERMANY

I began to fly long bomber-escort missions deep into Germany. I flew to places such as Berlin, Leipzig, and Hamburg, and my Mustang never missed a beat. I attribute that fact to my ground crew. My crew chief and Mustang caretaker was Charlie Clark. His assistant was Dennis Shupe, and the armorer was Forest Terry. The very first time I met ol’ Charlie was back in the spring of 1944. I was just a green second lieutenant assigned to fly Charlie’s black-and-white-checked P-47 Thunderbolt. As an officer and a pilot, I outranked Charlie, but I learned right away who was running the show! When I introduced myself to him, he looked at me for what seemed an eternity and sized me up. The only thing he said was, “I’ve never lost a pilot or airplane. You’re not going to screw my record up, are you?!”
